-ATLANTA TRAVEL GUIDE-
History of Atlanta
Knowing the history of Atlanta when you visit can make your vacation come alive. In 1782, military scouts moved west through Georgia. They discovered a small Cherokee village on the Chattahoochee River named Standing Peachtree. However, historians believe it was more likely that the natives had named their village after the pitch tree, a type of evergreen found throughout the region. By 1812, the new American military had established "Fort Peachtree" on the site of the Cherokee village.

Visitors to Atlanta often remark on a certain local curiosity: Oddly enough, just about every other street, plaza, or business establishment is dubbed "Peachtree," yet there doesn't seem to be a single peach tree in the entire city. The reason for this is that peach trees are not indigenous to the area. Here we have a tradition that stems from a confusion that dates back 200 years.

Touring Atlanta
Like so many other cities, Atlanta's downtown area is concerned with business and government. However, if you drive in your rental car from the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport in your rental car to the impressive Peachtree Center, you'll find it serves the business community as well as offering a venue (ATL) for entertainment. We encourage you to take your rental car from the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport to the downtown area where most major chain hotels are represented. Atlanta's most prestigious business addresses, such as the world headquarters of Coca-Cola are located here. The Georgia World Congress Center is host to trade shows and in the southern corner of the downtown area there sits the golden-domed Georgia State Capitol Building.

A great place for touring is the enclosed mall of shops and restaurants known as Underground Atlanta which opened in 1989. Visit the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, a part of the Underground complex which is a good place to find tourist information and places to drive your car on your holiday. The World of Coca-Cola is at the center which is the soft-drink giant's interactive museum.

Drive your rental car when you leave ATL, The Atlanta International Airport, Hartsfield to the 71,000-seat Georgia Dome, home of the Atlanta Falcons or the Phillips Arena, featuring Hawks basketball and Thrashers hockey. Continue your vacation by visiting the massive CNN Center which is home to cable television's first 24-hour news network, which is across the street.

Travel to Midtown to hotels such as the Four Seasons and Sheraton Colony Square where you may want to stay as you leave the airport. Here are the regional headquarters of such giants as IBM and BellSouth.

As you drive your rental car about Midtown you'll find it is the home of a concentration of cultural outlets, including the Fabulous Fox Theater, the High Museum of Art, and the Woodruff Arts Center, home to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Midtown is also home to restored Victorian houses. Once you leave the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport, ATL, you can go into midtown from the mansion dwellers in Ansley Park to the students from Georgia Tech, you will see a broad cross-section of Atlanta natives. Include on your vacation a trip to 180-acre Piedmont Park.

You may want to take your rental car to the city's attractive and prosperous tree-lined neighborhoods west of Peachtree where old Atlanta money make their home. As you go from the Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta where they have car rentals and van rentals, just a mile west of Peachtree, on this beautiful stretch of road you'll find in your travels the disco-themed Have A Nice Day Cafe and the august Georgia Governor's Mansion. Tour the Jimmy Carter Center in Inman Park and Emory University in Druid Hills.

Continue your holiday traveling to Little Five Points where second-hand shops, piercing parlors, funky bars and music abound, touching on the old neighborhoods of Inman Park and Candler Park. Drive your rental car from the Atlanta Hartsfield International Airport (ATL) and Tour the area where many nicely-restored bungalows and post-Civil War era homes line the peaceful streets nearby, including a good number of respectable bed-and-breakfasts.
