-CHICAGO TRAVEL GUIDE-

History of Chicago
Knowing the history of Chicago can make your vacation come alive.
Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, a fugitive from San Domingo was the first non-native to settle in the area now known as Chicago. A settlement had sprung up around his camp in 1779. Du Sable’s stake was purchased by another trader, who was bought out by Jonathan Kinzie in 1804. As the settlement grew, the government began to see it as the Gateway to the West and built Fort Dearborn, where the Chicago River and Lake Michigan met. The Native Americans were unhappy with this and, massacred most of the soldiers and their families in 1812. The fort was rebuilt in 1814, and, by 1833, Chicago was a growing frontier town. Chicago was officially incorporated as a city in 1837. The Illinois and Michigan canal opened in 1848. Rail lines soon followed, and Chicago became the nation’s inland shipping and railway hubs. It became the "feeder to the nation" with the opening of the Union Stockyards, memorialized in Carl Sandburg poems. In the 1850s Chicago grew from a small frontier town to a large city on Lake Michigan, drawing both Easterners and immigrants. Even now, the many countries represented are a part of Chicago's identity

Touring Chicago
Chicago is "The Windy City","The City that Works." and "The City of Big Shoulders." When you come into Chicago at O'Hare International Airport, take your rental car into downtown Chicago and see North America’s tallest building and one of the world’s largest office buildings. Midway International Airport in Chicago also has car rentals. It has a great transit system known as the "EL" which curves around "The Loop", as the downtown area is known. Chicago is known as "The City of Neighborhoods", which makes travelling about in your rental car interesting and enjoyable.

Start your vacation by leaving the airport in your rental car and head for the downtown area known as "The Loop". The Sears Tower, North America’s tallest building, is here, as is the Chicago Board of Trade, one of the biggest options and futures trading floors in the world O'Hare International Airport (ORD) is a great place for car rentals to drive into downtown and see these sights.

If you're looking for shopping, go from Midway International Airport and head for the Magnificent Mile ("Mag Mile") on State Street where you'll find Marshall Field's, Lord & Taylor's, Filene's Basement, and many other stores. If you have been driving and want to relax, try Harold Washington Library, The Chicago Museum of Science and Industry or the Art Institute of Chicago. Continue your holiday by driving your rental car or rental van from O'Hare International Airport into greater Chicago to the theaters, such as the Ford Center for the Performing Arts-Oriental Theatre, the Shubert Theatre or the Chicago Theatre where they have Broadway productions. Continue your travels by taking your rental car to the landmark Auditorium Theater, considered by some the most beautiful theatre in America. There are musicals, concerts and other entertainment in the South Loop area. Include in your vacation the renowned Goodman Theater recently relocated from its Art Institute location to new facilities in two former cinemas. Take a tour of the North Loop site where dining is the order of the day. Such are the many restaurants: try the Original Heaven on Seven, Italian Village, and Berghoff. Or include in your tour the newer “Boutique Hotels” such as the Hotel Allegro, Hotel Burnham Chicago and Hotel Monaco or the Palmer House and Chicago Hilton Plaza and Towers. You'll find that Chicago is serviced by two international airports: Midway Interntational Airport and the larger O'Hare International Airport (ORD) where you can get your discount rental car and take advantage of these sights.

While technically just outside the Loop, drive your rental car in from O'Hare International Airport or Midway International Airport and travel to Grant Park. This park, on Lake Michigan, is often referred to as “Chicago’s front yard.” The majestic Buckingham Fountain is here and a beautiful rose garden. It is also the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s outdoor home at the Petrillo Music Shell. The park is huge and is home to the annual Taste of Chicago festival as well as the Jazz Fest, Blues Fest, and Gospel Fest.

Lake Shore Drive, is one of the city’s major north-south arteries, running along Lake Michigan's lakefront and is a perfect place to take your rental car and see the sights of Chicago after you've rented your car from one of the two Chicago international airports: O'Hare and Midway. It is a beautiful drive, and definitely worth taking your rental car and spending some of your vacation time traveling the boulevard. Another place you may want to take a tour of is Lincoln Park, the Lincoln Park Zoo and the Lincoln Park Conservatory. While on your tour drive south on Lake Shore Drive to the Museum Campus where the Shedd Aquarium, Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum converge. Travel along Lake Shore Drive at night; it's a spectacular view!

Continue your travels further north, it brings you to Lakeview, a neighborhood that serves as a popular nightlife center. Get out of your rental car and kick up your heels in the live music venues in the uptown area, such as the the Aragon Ballroom, The Riviera and the prohibition-era jazz bar, The Green Mill. Some of the best music in the city whether jazz or rock can be found here.

Don't forget to include in your tour Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs baseball team. Or drive your rental car to Soldier Field, home of the Chicago Bears football team.

There is a sense, while touring in your car or van that Chicago has it all! It is all yours in your rental car, luxury rental car, SUV or rental van from Midway International Airport or O'Hare International Airport (ORD). And, we haven't even mentioned vacation sites available where you can get good food, or visit a museum, a planetarium, a Japanese garden or aquarium.
