-DALLAS TRAVEL GUIDE-
History of Dallas
Knowing the history of Dallas will make your vacation tour more interesting. Its history starts during the mid-17th and 18th centuries, when French and Spanish explorers moved in on the land where Native Americans, mainly Comanche, had lived for generations. In 1841 John Neely Bryan had a vision to take a dusty river crossing and turn it into a thriving inland port calling it Dallas. He left Tennessee, laid claim to over 600 acres and built a one-room cabin.

Unfortunately, Bryan's dream of navigating the Trinity River from Dallas to the Gulf of Mexico for trade purposes didn't run as planned. Nearly 30 years later, in 1868, a steamboat reached Dallas from Galveston. Since the voyage took more than a year, there was little cause for celebration. For that matter, few people celebrated and Bryan's dream of a thriving settlement languished until after the Civil War.

It was John Neely Bryan who first planted the seeds of Dallas' "can do" spirit. He never gave up on his dream, and in 1872, through the sheer force of his strong personality, along with a few opportune gifts like the the Texas Central Railroad which diverted its tracks to Dallas he was able to keep his dream alive. In 1873, the Texas Pacific Railroad arrived, and a town was born, with the town’s population increasing to 6,000. By this time, Dallas was well on its way to becoming the thriving inland port of Bryan's dream.

Touring Dallas
Since its inception as a small trading post in 1841, Dallas has grown to include a vast array of hotels, shops, restaurants, historic buildings and museums as well as other businesses. Land at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and get your rental car and drive into Dallas. It's home to more than one million people, with more moving here every day. The ninth largest city in the United States, Dallas is known as the Southwest's leading business and financial center and as the number-one visitor destination in Texas. This is a "big business" city, evidenced by the increasing number of companies that relocate to Dallas each year. Dallas is a great place to rent a car because it covers so much area. With more shopping centers per capita than any other major city nationwide and four times more restaurants per person than New York City, Dallas is the place to vacation whether you're doing business, shopping, eating or touring the sites.

On your vacation, leave the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and tour the area at the north end of downtown. Dallas' Arts District includes the Dallas Museum of Art and the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, whose center stage is home to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. For upscale shopping, continue your tour to the Plaza of the Americas in your rental car, where a 15-story atrium complete with palm trees surrounds the shopping area. In the heart of downtown you'll find the Adam's Mark Hotel, the largest hotel in Texas.

Formerly a warehouse district, the West End Market Place is known today for its entertainment and its unique shops, as well as for its street entertainers, outdoor ice-skating rink and vintage street lights. After you've rented your car at the International Airport in Dallas/Fort Worth, spend your holiday at the upscale Hotel Adolphus, built in 1912, offering you a stay surrounded by elegance. A variety of restaurants and nightclubs make this district one of the liveliest places to be on Friday and Saturday nights. Continue your vacation at The Palm which features a Texas-style menu with a touch of class, while Y.O. Ranch is well known for its Tex-Mex cuisine. The West End is also an excellent place to experience Texas History—visit Dealey Plaza, Old Red Courthouse and the Sixth Floor Museum.

Travel three blocks east of downtown and you're at the "deep end of Elm" street, where turn-of-the-century African-American life and culture thrived with great blues and jazz artists. Clubs in Deep Ellum feature the most current music, from folk, blues and jazz to reggae, alternative and rock. Tour in your rental car, rental van or SUV from the Dallas Fort/Worth International Airport (DFW) to one of the oldest clubs in Deep Ellum, Club Dada, where you'll always find a variety of music, or Trees, which attracts locals and business travelers alike with its cutting-edge live rock.

Drive your rental convertible from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, head north from downtown, on the red brick streets of McKinney Avenue, and you'll find fine restaurants and antique shops, many housed in renovated historic homes. Continue your tour downtown via the volunteer-operated McKinney Avenue Trolley, which consists of restored streetcars dating as far back as 1906 and is dedicated to preserving the history of electric railways. The area's four-star boutique-style Hotel St. Germain is tucked amidst the busy city, providing an oasis for business travelers or even tourists on holiday.

If Texas is known for doing things big, then North Dallas is a prime example. Take your rental car to the home of big houses, big shopping centers and some of the finest stores, boutiques and restaurants in the area. As Dallas continues to grow, more residents are heading north into the suburbs of Plano, Richardson and Frisco, the nation's second fastest-growing city.

With more square footage of shopping than Los Angeles or New York, you're likely to run out of money before you run out of places to shop in Texas. From DWF, the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, travel in your rental luxury car to Stonebriar Center in Frisco, where you'll find more than just shopping; this entertainment center also houses a 24-screen movie theater as well as an NHL-regulation-size ice-skating rink.

Whether you're in town on holiday for one day or one week, Irving serves as an excellent location minutes from DFW International Airport, centrally poised between Dallas and Fort Worth. Pick up your rental car at the airport and visit this community, named after American author Washington Irving. It offers convenient access to numerous shopping venues, restaurants and theaters—all the best the Dallas Metroplex has to offer. Recreation thrives at The Movie Studios at Las Colinas, home to major motion picture, television and commercial productions. Visit the Mustang Cafe for excellent Southwestern cuisine.
