History of Fort Lauderdale
Knowing the history of the Florida Gold Coast, of which Fort Lauderdale is a part, can make your vacation come alive. Hotels and condominiums were changed from palmetto scrub and swampland. Many generations ago, the Abaniki tribe of Native Americans lived beside the sea here. Generations later pirates followed the Native Americans, where they awaited an opportunity to attack Spanish galleons loaded with gold heading home from Central America. Some didn't just wait for opportunity, they created it. Early entrepreneurs called "wreckers" lured ships onto the rough shoreline. Wreckers had a pretty easy job of it; they were helped by hurricanes and inadequate navigational aids which sent many a ship to their watery grave. This happened so much that massive parties went on for days in Boca Raton when a Spanish shipwreck produced hundreds of barrels of sherry.

Once upon a time, one could look down the road along Fort Lauderdale beach and inland along U.S.1 and see flat land and the occasional scrubby palmetto as far as the eye could see. Now villages meet, adjoining towns where towns grow into cities, suburbs meet each other until the entire county has become one sprawling urban center that stretches from the sea to the Everglades and from the northern border of Miami to the southern border of Palm Beach and beyond. Enormous and rapid growth, marked by a continuing influx of young, middle age and old represents a variety of cultures and outlooks on life. However, each community that make up what is loosely known as Greater Fort Lauderdale strongly protects its own identity, proud of its history and its growth, its amenities and its diversity. Hollywood, for instance, was one of the earliest communities in the region, tracing its history back to its founder Joseph Young, who owned a handsome house on Hollywood Boulevard. Once Young and his billiard buddies had a clear view of the ocean more than a mile away. Today many houses, hotels and development now block the view. Although Young could no longer see the sea, he would no doubt be pleased to see the sprawling metropolitan area he started with land sales and abundant hype.

Leave the Fort Lauderdale Airport in your rental car and drive to Hollywood, Florida. Hollywood stretches from the ocean to the western end of the county. Its social life on the city's Broadwalk rolls along sand dunes and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bistros, rustic lounges and small shops. Here, on your vacation, you'll find people on bikes and roller blades, people strolling along the sea and visitors, spending their holdidays by relaxing in the sun and taking advantage of the outdoor lifestyle that is Hollywood. Drive your holiday rental car from FLL (Fort Lauderdale Airport) to Hollywood's small but certainly entertaining downtown area which is built around one of the several big traffic circles that identify the city. Architectural renewal and a redevelopment of downtown streets have been beautified with trees and flowers. Downtown Hollywood has become a popular dining and shopping area which make for a fun and relaxing vacation.

Not far away, continue your holiday by driving your rental convertible to the tiny town of Dania, which was once tomato farms and now is best known for a street lined on both sides by dozens of antique shops full of collectibles. From Fort Lauderdale Airport, take your rental car to the beach where you will find some of the region's most intriguing sands. Continue driving your car to the John U. Lloyd State Park, a wonderful wooded strip of beach that's a favorite for picnics.

Just south of Hollywood, drive your rental van from the Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL) to the seaside town of Hallandale is where Snowbirds winter. Spend some holiday time watching the thoroughbreds at Gulfstream Park Race Track, where the nation's best racehorses appear for a three-month racing season. Or drive your luxury rental car to the Greyhound racing which is also a popular sport here. If you're looking for a place to stay, travel north of Fort Lauderdale to Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, where there are small hotels and seaside cafes.

You may wish to start your vacation by leaving the airport and traveling to the city of Pompano, which gets its name from a fabulous fish found in abundance here. Take your rental car to Pompano where there is sportfishing, a big fishing pier and a popular seafood festival. For a nice afternoon's holiday drive, travel north from Fort Lauderdale along Route A1A, the beachside highway. From the Fort Lauderdale Airport, start your holiday car rental where the Intracoastal Waterway is on one side and on other, the Atlantic Ocean. Drive your car to Hillsboro Beach, which has some of the region's most imposing seaside homes, and which looks very much as it did a century ago when the fabled "Barefoot Mailman" strode the sand, delivering mail to the region's earliest settlers.
