History of Honolulu Knowing the history of Honolulu can make your vacation come alive. Hawaii's geological past began some 60 million years ago as a hot spot or a bulge of hot, molten rock running to the planet's iron core. It rose to the Pacific Ocean plate, where it melted the rock eventually breaking out of the Earth's crust as lava, and slowly turning into land. Today on Honolulu's home island, O'ahu, there are the remnants of two huge volcanoes, Waianae and Ko'olau. The earliest inhabitants of these islands were most likely navigators from the Marquesa Islands. They found their way to Hawaii sometime around 900 A.D. Then came sailors from New Zealand, Tahiti and other Pacific islands. British Captain James Cook started the "modern era" of Hawaii on January 18, 1778. For the most part, Hawaiians welcomed the foreign crews, not knowing they brought deadly diseases to the native population. During the next 100 years, 80 percent of the native Hawaiian population succumbed to these illnesses. King Kamehameha the First died in May of 1819 just as the first of the American Christian missionaries proclaimed their goal of "raising up the people of Hawaii to an elevated state of Christian civilization." Touring Honolulu Leave the Honolulu International Airport in your rental car and travel in to Honolulu which is an ultra-modern city full of enormous diversity. The county of Honolulu is home to 800,000 people of all races and cultures. Travel to Waikiki Beach which stretches from the slopes of Diamond Head to Ala Moana and the Ala Wai Yacht Harbor. The beach itself is a great spot for locals and tourists, alike. There is a near-shore break for the children, while the more experienced swimmers surf the waves outside. The main artery of Waikiki is Kalakaua Boulevard. Most of the hotels, shops, and restaurants are along this well-known strip. The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center is a must-see for any traveler who likes to shop. For inexpensive souvenirs, bargain your way around Duke's Lane, a cramped and busy place for local vendors and tourists on the look for a good buy. On your vacation, rent a car and drive to where you can dine on pho , sushi, fresh seafood or gourmet buffets at area restaurants. Travelers can attest to Waikiki hotels being some of the best in the world. You can find everything from upscale, five-star accomodations such as the Sheraton Moana Surfrider Hotel to lodgings at less than $50 a night at places such as the Aston Aloha Surf Hotel. Do travel to Chinatown on your vacation. You'll find it one of Honolulu's most exciting areas. Chinatown has been a welcoming spot for immigrants to Hawaii for more than 120 years. Taoist, Buddhist and Shinto temples are found next to herbalists, shops, and restaurants. One of the travel highlights of Chinatown include Maunakea Marketplace, a local shopping plaza complete with its own ethnic food court. Take your rental car and visit the Chinese Cultural Plaza, open-air courtyard inhabited by jewelers, Asian restaurants and cultural organizations. Continue your trip by going to Ala Moana, a diverse area which is probably the first place business travelers will see due to the new Hawaii Convention Center. While on vacation, don't forget to visit the world famous Ala Moana Shopping Center, the Hawaiian Islands premier shopping mall. From the Honolulu international Airport (HNL)Take your rental car to Ala Moana Beach Park and Magic Island which are beloved by locals and tourists alike. Restaurant Row, the perfect place for business travelers' corporate lunches and the Happy Hour crowd, is known as the "gateway" to downtown Honolu. Landmarks are numerous in Honolulu's downtown area and waterfront. Drive in from HNL, the Honolulu International Airport, those that can't be missed by tourists as they travel in Honolulu are the Aloha Tower, bustling Honolulu Harbor and stunning Iolani Palace. The Aloha Tower Marketplace probably throws more parties, festivals and celebrations than any other place in Honolulu. Among the various and diverse entertainment venues are the Honolulu Symphony and Hawaii Opera Theatre Travel in your car rented at the Honolulu International Airport from to the Manoa Valley, where the University of Hawaii is located. The Valley is typical of the erosion caused by lava flows. The main attraction of the valley itself is the University of Hawaii, a research university founded in 1907. As your vacation continues, drive your rental SUV to Manoa and the nearby neighborhood of Makiki which supply areas of culture on the island. Although travel guides may not publicize it as a burgeoning cultural spot, it is home to galleries, museums and theater companies including The Contemporary Museum, one of the best art museums in Hawaii. The Manoa Valley Theater is an enthusiastic community theater group. Travel in your rental convertible to East Honolulu: Diamond Head Kahala and Hawaii Kai. There are several major tourist attractions spread out through this area so rent a car at the Honolulu International Airport (HNL) and continue your holiday in your to Diamond Head which is great for hikers. This peak can be seen from many vantage points in Honolulu, but for outdoor enthusiasts, there's no better way to experience it than by hiking to the summit and surveying the island below.
