History of Miami Knowing the history of Miami when you visit can make your vacation come alive. The Tequesta Native Americans lived here for an estimated 2,000 years. The Spanish built a mission here in 1567, when the area was known as "Mayaimi, where it remained secluded until the American acquisition of Florida in 1821. Hundreds of pioneers settled the region around the Miami River. A settler named Julia Tuttle convinced magnate Henry Flagler to extend the route of the railroad he was building. In 1896, the completion of the Florida East Coast Railroad opened Miami to the rest of the United States, and marked the birth of a new city. Touring Miami Miami is at once a vacation spot, a 24-hour party and a secluded desert island, a fashion center and a retirement community. After you land at the Miami International Airport, rent a car and drive into Miami. The city's cultural diversity is heard in the many different languages being spoken spoken here. It becomes more apparent as you travel through the many colorful and exotic districts which make up Greater Miami. After picking up your rental car from the airport, you may well head out for Miami Beach. In the 1940s, when vacationers began to arrive, Miami Beach was the center of action. Although years have passed and times have changed, the Beach it's still a hot spot. Tourists can stay at resorts such as the Fontainebleau and the Eden Roc. Shops and restaurants line the streets, and of course there are the miles of white sand beaches. From Miami Beach you can travel to South Beach. Once the home of retired citizens and starving artists, South Beach has become a much desired tourist vacation destination stunning in its Art Deco architecture. Leave Miami International Airport and drive your rental car to South Beach where you'll find restaurants, bars, shops and dance clubs which are glamorous and trendy. And if you're looking for fine dining on your holiday, it can be found in Bal Harbour. Although primarily a business district, there is still lots to see when you travel to downtown Miami. Tour the design district between Northeast 36th and 41st streets, or go to the museums in the Metro-Dade Cultural Center after you leave MIA (Miami International Airport. The Port of Miami is just next to Bayside, where you can easily find a boat tours around the bay. Take your rental car and tour Coconut Grove when you leave the Miami International Airport. Although Coconut Grove is one of the oldest areas in Miami, it still is an active hub. Full of energy and creativity, the Grove is as busy as South Beach, but in a different way.
