-ORLANDO TRAVEL GUIDE-

History of Orlando
Knowing the history of Orlando when you visit can make your vacation come alive.
Florida's history dates back to the 1500s. On Easter Day in 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon came ashore at what is now St. Augustine in the northeast corner of the state. Ponce de Leon and the early settlers found mosquitoes, swamps and Native American tribes with little interest in sharing the land. In the early 1800s, the Seminoles fought two bitter wars to retain their land. The second battle ended in 1842 and Orlando's history began. Settlers followed soldiers into Central Florida to an Army post known as Fort Gatlin, located at what is now Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando. Originally named Jernigan after an early settler, Orlando changed its name in 1857 to honor soldier Orlando Reeves. He was killed by an arrow while on sentinel duty at the fort, in 1835 as he raced to warn of an oncoming raid. The city of Orlando was born on July 21, 1875, population 85. With the development of Walt Disney World, Universal Studios, SeaWorld and a host of smaller attractions Orlando became a series of planned communities that house a wide range of residents, from Disney's 55,000 "cast members" to sports celebrities and millionaires.

Every major commercial airline and many charter aircraft fly into Orlando International Airport (MCO) or the much smaller Sanford International Airport. Amtrak trains and Amtrak's Autotrain serves Orlando, as well. An automobile is the best way to get around this sprawling area. If you are a vacationer, you will want to rent a car, or van for your touring.

Every national rental car chain operates here, along with some smaller ones. Local car rental agencies are accustomed to tourists renting a car in one Florida city and dropping it off in another or vice versa, although they charge an additional fee to do so. It is a vacationer's paradise so be prepared to have fun touring the Orlando area.

Touring Orlando
Drive your rental car in from Orlando International Airport to Walt Disney World, you will find everything from hotels to shopping, restaurants, sports and nightlife this huge park. Within the park are thousands of hotel rooms to fit a wide range of budgets, and all provide shuttle transportation that gets you to Disney World's four theme parks, three water parks other diversions. A monorail zips passengers to many destinations; boats and buses serve all the others. The wait is rarely more than a few minutes, but you will need a rental car to get you to the park.

On U.S. 192, there are dozens of budget-to moderate-price hotels with rates in the $30-40 range and even less in really slow seasons that you can stay in after you drive your rental van in from the Orlando International Airport or Stanford Airport. Here, too, are dozens of inexpensive restaurants ranging from fast food to ethnic options, grocery stores, discount shopping malls and dinner show entertainment. There are all the amenities needed, whether high priced or inexpensive for the tourists needs here. U.S. 192, also called Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, stretches from downtown Kissimmee past the main entry gate to Walt Disney World and to U.S. 27, which is roughly the western edge of Orlando. International Drive was once the way to Orlando's Convention Center, a few hotels and very little else. Today, tourists can find shopping malls, attractions, towering hotels and restaurants. The Orlando Convention Center, which is about to double in size, lures a constant round of meetings for conventioneers, business people and those on holiday as well.

On your vacation, take your rental SUV from the Orlando International Airport and drive to Universal Studios, which moved in to compete with Walt Disney World. Hotels, restaurants and shopping areas grew up around it providing accommodations for tourists on holiday. While Universal's two parks do not yet begin to rival Walt Disney World in size, the surrounding area is growing fast. You'll find a Universal Studios exit off I-4 after you leave MCO.

You may want to visit downtown Orlando on your vacation which is great to see in a rental convertible when you come from the Orlando International Airport. Downtown Orlando. It is one of the prettiest parts of the city, with its tree-lined neighborhoods, attractive older homes and its shops, restaurants, and entertainment areas. Continue your tour by going to Church Street Station, a cluster of themed dining, dancing and drinking spots.

Whenever you decide to visit, Orlando; great weather, cheap car rentals and fun amusement parks and entertainment make Orlando a wonderful place for tourists and locals alike.
