Phoenix
Knowing the history of Phoenix when you visit can make your vacation come alive.
Phoenix's history dates back to 700 AD, according to the Pueblo Grande Ruins. This early civilization constructed an irrigation system from canals leading from the Salt River, which provided water to irrigate the land. This ancient civilization disappeared in the 1400s. Severe drought is the most widely accepted cause.

While traveling on horseback, Jack Swilling of Wickenburg surveyed the expanse of desert and envisioned a farming community. The lack of available water was the primary obstacle, so he organized the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company to divert water to the Valley's land. 1868 brought with it the area's first crops. A small colony, Swillings Mill was formed four miles east of modern day Phoenix. The idea for a new name for the settlement was born from the idea that, just as the legendary phoenix rises up from the ashes, the new town would spring up from the ruins of a former civilization. Phoenix, is known as The Valley of the Sun for its 300-plus days of sunshine each year.

Touring Phoenix

South Phoenix is largely comprised of low-cost housing and industry. The northeast Valley finds the towns of Carefree and Cave Creek, home to upscale resorts like the Boulders Resort and Spa. Cave Creek residents are more middle-incomes and families. Attractions here include unique shopping at el Pedregal Festival Marketplace or dining and drinks at Crazy Ed's Satisfied Frog.

The centerpiece of the city is the world's tallest fountain jetting water 560 feet from the center of the lake in the town's park. This powerful white plume can be seen for miles around. Originally a cattle ranch, this planned community had eyes for retirees in the 70s and now prides itself on its small town appeal.

You'll find if you travel from the PHX, Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix in your rental car to Apache Junction and the Superstition Mountains is virtually a desert wilderness and has yet to see grand scale development, although some newer stucco and tile communities provide stark contrast to the clusters of retirement mobile homes. Take a tour through Goldfield Ghost Town and ride an authentic narrow guage mining train, or try your hand at gold-panning.

Whenever you decide to visit, the Valley of the Sun, with great weather, cheap car rentals and fabulous scenic drives, sprinkled with plenty of western folklore and entertainment make Phoenix a wonderful place for tourists and locals alike.
