History of Seattle Knowing the history of Seattle when you visit can make your vacation come alive. The first settlers of this Pacific Northwest area were the Snohomish, Suquamish and other Native Americans. This area was later named Seattle after the Native American tribal chief, Chief Sealth. In 1851, the Denny Party landed, where Alki Point Lighthouse now stands, in West Seattle. These pioneers moved across Elliott Bay to settle in the sheltered area that is now downtown Seattle and Pioneer Square. The lush Pacific Northwest offered an abundance of big evergreen trees that settlers cut and sold for lumber. Thus, timber became the economic mainstay of this new community. With the community's newly created wealth came an interest in higher education. The University of Washington was established in 1861 and moved to its present location in 1895. It remains the state's largest educational institution. Touring Seattle Tacoma International Airport is a great place to pick up your rental car, This medium-sized city has a booming economy and is growing at a rapid rate with multinational corporations like Microsoft, Boeing and Starbucks. But the real draw are the blue skies, abundant water and majestic mountain ranges which keep Seattle natives firmly planted in this beautiful city. Take your rental car from Tacoma International Airport and go to west Seattle to the sandy beach where people meet for walking, jogging, biking, skating and scuba diving. Cafes like the Alki Bakery and restaurants such as Salty's on Alki line are on the main street for those who've played at the beach all day. Visit the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks to watch boats travel from salt water to freshwater; then take a trip to Golden Gardens to watch the sunset. Popular restaurants include Ray's Boathouse and Bad Albert's Tap and Grill. You may want to stop by Fisherman's Terminal for a look at the boats that keep the fishing industry thriving. Continue your holiday travels by trying Chinook's for a taste of the fresh seafood caught from those very boats. Yes, this Washington also has a "Capitol Hill". Take your rental car from the airport and drive to this area which is a mix of shops, art-house theaters, wonderful restaurants and interesting people. Some of the city's most historic houses are located here, as is the Seattle Asian Art Museum and Volunteer Park Seattle University and Cornish College of the Arts are also located on this hill. Go from Seattle Tacoma International Airport to Fremont, hip and esoteric, is a fun place to travel to. As you drive your rental car to Fremont, the first thing you'll see is a sign that says, "Welcome to the Center of the Universe". A car-eating troll, a smoking rocket and a bronzed Vladimir Lenin statue, bought for $150,000, and the life-size statues waiting for a bus are some of the wierd things you'll see here. Reserve Saturday on your travels for the gallery walks. The Fremont Sunday Market is a great place to wander. There are also restaurants to relax and eat in. Continue your holiday travels to Madison Park. Drive your rental car or SUV out to the shores of Lake Washington and you'll find fun little shops, restaurants and cafes. Spend some holiday time at the beach nearby and take in the scenic view of the Eastside. Take your rental car to Kirkland, across the Lake Washington from Seattle. Pioneer Square is Seattle's oldest neighborhood and where the term "Skid Row" originated. Lumberjacks skidded logs down "Skid Road," now Yesler Street, to a mill at the bottom of the hill. The area is now filled with art galleries, small shops, bookstores, including Elliott Bay Book Company, and restaurants like the elegant Il Terrazzo Carmine. Many clubs feature live music, and tourists and locals, alike, won't want to miss Seattle's Fat Tuesday celebration held here.
